The Family of God
To know God as Father is to be His child and part of His family. Children of God live a different sort of life from the worldly standard. In the world people want things - lots of things -far more than we need and we become possessive and self seeking. Our Father knows what we need and loves to provide for us if we trust Him.
Lord, I know that possessions don't satisfy; give me the strength to turn to You first, every time.
Support and Encouragement
If we try and live apart from God's family, the Church, we are bound to fail. We all need help and support along the journey of life if we are to enter God's kingdom. Thinking we don't need others is a supreme arrogance that is not a mark of God's own children. Lord I thank you that You have given me gifts in order to help others and, at the same time, from the gifts You have given them, receive strength in my weakness. Amen.
Receiving and Giving Forgiveness
Jesus was very clear when He spoke about forgiveness. Unless we are ready to forgive .... But forgiving is not about pretending, or sweeping under the carpet - or even forgetting. Forgiving is simply continuing to act towards the one who has hurt us as we would want them to act towards us. Lord, thank You for forgiving me. I know it cost You dearly on that cross. May I learn, with You leading me, how to truly forgive.
Feeding and Growing
We are all aware that without food, we will die; so it is true also of our spiritual need. We are more than animal; we are created to grow in the Spirit of God, our Creator, to become fully and truly human, as God intended. The Word of God brings us essential nourishment and daily reading of the Bible keeps us healthy and alive. Lord, Your word is a wonderful blessing, may I feed on Your truth every day, growing to fullness in You.
The Holy Spirit as Counsellor
What an amazing God we have. A love that has moved heaven and earth to bring us back to life, and the gift of Himself in His Holy Spirit to feed, to teach, to heal, to empower and make us ready for the eternal blessing that is prepared for us. Greatest friend, guide and counsellor -Holy Spirit of God -I thank You. Open my ears to hear Your voice; open my eyes to see You at work, and make me willing to serve as Jesus did.
Living the Faith
Jesus showed us that it is as we live out the purpose God has for us, we enable God's kingdom to be seen here on earth; the kingdom for which we constantly pray. Feeding on His word, supported by our brothers and sisters in Christ, through prayer and study, we are empowered to be just the people God wants - right here and now - and it is all through His love for You and me. Lord, however can I thank You enough.
Father, why is it that when You call us into Your loving family, we so easily think more of the passing rubbish of life that we are leaving behind, than of the glories that You have prepared for us? Your wonderful patience is beyond understanding as You wait for us to realize our foolishness and Your great goodness. Please forgive me for being so slow to respond at times, and help me to see the opportunities to help others to find the real riches of life in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Amen
Jesus told many stories and parables about growing
things - vines, wheat, olives, even weeds. The
reason is clear - we all understand how essential it
is that plants have the best nourishment if they are
to survive. Farming skills are all about providing the
best possible environment for the crops so that the
harvest will be a time of rejoicing and not starvation
as, sadly, we see in so much of the world still. But
there are two factors at play here: Firstly, there is
our bit. We ensure that the seed is given the best possible opportunity by choosing good soil, by protecting the seed as far as possible, and by caring for it as it grows. It takes time and effort as well as wisdom and understanding. Secondly, there is God's bit. The design of the seed, the process of growing and the weather are all out of the farmer's control. But when both work together, the crop is wonderful. This picture is intended to show us that our life, like the seed, is a gift of God. As we care for each other, in wisdom and understanding, keeping our eyes on the whole purpose of life as God intended, God promises to do His bit! Well, rather more than His bit. He does a great deal more than a bit - He even brings to life the seed that had died because it wanted to be what it could never be. He brings us so close to Himself that He even meets with us and, if we invite Him, will come and live with us, ensuring that, whatever happens outside, the seed within us will bear a truly wonderful harvest of blessing.
