Lord, the more I get to know You through reading the Bible, through prayer and through looking for you each day - the more I wonder that You should care for me. Your love is at the same time my greatest need, and yet frightening in its immensity. Lord, as I begin to understand something of the love that created me; the love that desires to bring out the best in me and draws me ever closer to being the person I was intended to be - I know I need You more than I need anything else. Hold me tight, Lord.
It would be impossible to describe God. We don’t
understand even a fraction of the things that we can
see - so attempting to describe God would be foolish.
However, we can talk about our experience of Him.
The Bible is a record of mankind’s experience of God
and there is no better place to start. But we can also
add to that our own individual experience - the
unwritten books of our personal Bible. In this session
we look at just a few of the attributes of our amazing
God - and it is only a few because our language is a rather inadequate tool to express something that is so deeply personal.
The picture I have is of a small child who loves their Dad immensely and delights in his love, and loves to please him, but has not the faintest idea of what he does, where he goes, or his plans for the future. It doesn’t alter for one moment the closeness of the bond or their relationship. The child knows that it is special to Dad - whatever else happens; and Dad would do anything for his child - even dying if necessary. Now, ask such a child to describe their Dad. To someone else who had a Dad like that, only a few words would be necessary. To someone who knew no such Dad, words can only begin, in the smallest way, to convey the wonder of such love - we need to experience it ourselves. Thank God we can do just that; through prayer, reading and obedience
Greatness
To study the sky through a telescope and understand the immensity of space or to look through a microscope at the beauty of the tiniest things is to begin to see the sheer wonder and greatness of God - beyond anything our small minds can imagine. Lord, may I glimpse Your awesome greatness reflected in Your creation today, and so help me to never forget that you are ALL Mighty God - and I am Your creation.
Holiness
Holiness -the absolute, purity of God. Amazingly, God calls us to be holy too, just as He is holy! Holiness for us, though, is only possible because Jesus has taken the punishment for our sin. God has done in Jesus something that we could never have done on our own. As long as we live our lives devoted to serving Jesus Christ, we are always seen as holy in the sight of God - never mind what you see in the mirror. What a holy God!
Righteousness
Father God, just as I see that small children cannot understand why their loving parents do all the things they do, so I can never fully understand You. And yet I know that throughout history You have turned everything to good in the lives of those who trust You. Loving God, everything You do is right and good.
Righteous Father, I thank You that I can trust You always, whatever things may look like.
Graciousness
A difficult word to define, but imagine a mighty emperor’s servant falling at the emperor’s feet, weeping because he has just broken the emperor’s most valuable vase. Now imagine the emperor reaching down and lifting the servant up, embracing him and saying gently, “Don’t worry. I’m having a banquet today and I would like you to come and share it with me.” Praise You, Lord, for Your wonderful graciousness.
Kindness
We might think of kindness as a selfless response to a need - like stopping on your way to an important meeting to help someone who has fallen over. But God’s kindness is in a different league; it is active, not just reactive. Just as a loving parent seldom stops thinking about the good things they want to do for their children, so is God’s kindness. We can never deserve it, and yet it is in His wonderful nature to show it.
Faithfulness
Ever broken a promise? Of course you couldn’t help it - you were sick or the car broke down or you forgot. The Bible lists over 5,000 promises of God - and He has never broken one! Now that is faithfulness. When we come to God in repentance, confessing our sins and seeking His forgiveness, we are not only washed clean with the blood of Jesus, but marked with the seal of God; the Holy Spirit. Thank you, Faithful God.
