We start by keeping a minute or two of silence, inviting God to be in our thoughts and prayers
Spend a minute or two simply finding ways
to praise God because
He is our God;
Father, Son
and Holy Spirit.
Read your Bible (if you haven’t already).
Before setting out ...
Lord, you tell me that I have everything I need in you - and that if I try and take too much for the journey it will slow me down or even stop me altogether. So Lord, help me to remember that as I pack each day. Stop me from thinking I need so much stuff; things around me; things to do. Lord, my earthly security sometimes overbalances me with the weight of it all and I fall. Lord, help me to know how to travel light.
Getting to know the guide
Lord, so often I think I know the way and go running ahead, or down a side path, and get lost.
Lord, I want to walk with you really, but other people, other things seem to catch my attention.
I am so grateful that you haven’t given up on me; so grateful for your wonderful patience. Lord Jesus, as I learn to share my life with you, give me the wisdom to see that you are sharing your risen life with me - daily! Praise you, Lord!
Preparations
Lord, when you sent the disciples out, their preparation was simply trusting your word - entirely and only. Lord, forgive me when I fail to go because I think I am not ready and need endless preparation before I will move. Give me the courage to know that when you say ‘go’, I have all the preparation I need, because your Spirit goes with me. Lord, may my life; my words and actions, be always a sign of your love.
Setting out
Lord, sometimes when I try go out to do what you ask, the way ahead looks a bit scary and I feel safer staying where I am. Lord, you tell me that you are the lamp to guide my feet. Give me the desire to read and understand your word so that I can learn to trust more and more in your promises - every day I live. Lord, take my hand, guide my feet, and let me walk boldly into the unknown, knowing that you are always there.
Fellow travellers
Lord, I am so grateful that you have given me others to travel the path with me. I am so glad of their support and their gifts when I am lacking. But Lord, I know that you have given me to them also; so please help me to be faithful in ministering to them freely with the gifts that you have given me, so that together we all may travel in joy, rejoicing in the unity of love, as one family. Praise you, Lord for your love to us all.
The journey
Lord, how often have I said, ‘your will be done,’ and then gone out to do what I want. I am sorry Lord. I know that when I do walk with you it is a wonderful experience, however dark the days; so please keep me on the path and guard me from distraction and temptation; from idleness and being too busy. And Lord, let me walk with such joy in my heart that others will want to walk with you too. Thank you, Lord.

Father God, I thank you for your great goodness in creating me, and for giving me a desire to know you.
But Lord, I have to confess that I have sometimes tried to fill that desire with other things, or even other people - and they have let me down. Lord, show me again that when I fill that desire with you, and you alone, the other things and other people fall into their right place, and I find your peace. Lord, help me to start each day with you; to walk each day with you, and at the end of each day to rest in you. Amen.
‘Jesus sent the disciples out, giving them power and
authority ‘to preach the kingdom of God and to heal
the sick’, telling them to take nothing for the journey
and to rely on the hospitality of those who would
listen. And they went’. Matthew, Mark and Luke all
regard this as really important. Why? Because,
although these disciples had not been with Jesus for
very long, they were ready to rely on his word and
on the authority over evil that he so clearly had and
wanted to give to them. And they achieved wonderful results. You can read about in the gospels. However, this didn’t mean that they had everything sorted and perfect by any means! There were lots of mistakes to follow - lots of misunderstandings too - but they stuck together and they stuck with Jesus - through thick and thin, failure and success. Many others left him but those twelve disciples (and, Luke records, about 120 others) held firmly together - even after Jesus had been taken and killed. And look what they achieved! As the Holy Spirit came upon the faithful, thousands turned to Christ.
Today, thousands still respond as the faithful speak the same message of the Good News of Jesus Christ. All God needs are men and women who will be faithful witnesses of His love and power, so that He can do the same mighty things. Are you ready? Yes!
